The answer is: it depends. While the above chart may require both reading glasses and a Latin dictionary, I can tell you that it lists different muscle groups that either need to be stretched or strengthened. The muscle groups on the left are the “tonic” muscles. These are in a constant state of use and tension and, as a result, need more flexibility work. The “phasic” muscles on the right, need more strengthening exercises. If you’re pursuing the “beach and mirror” muscles, you’re probably working your tonic muscles too hard.
Not getting this balance right leads to dysfunctional movement, pain, and the limited function associated with aging. At my age, I try to pay more attention to balancing the phasic and tonic muscles. Even with this change in program I think I still look better than a lot of people I see at the beach.
