Do you want to run faster or jump higher? How about signaling the biologically relevant survival and mating proof of sufficient fat reserves?
Well, THAT one might not occupy your conscious awareness but I bet you DO want those jeans to look good.
The “glutes” – the muscles of your butt, are the main muscles involved in hip extension. That means the glutes play a role in sexy things like athletics and in mundane activities like getting out of a chair. A sleepy butt means that other muscles will have to compensate for movements they weren’t evolved to engage in.
When you start to do your glute work, you need to wake the muscles up. For many people, this means turning on muscles that have not been asked to do any work for years. We do this with exercises like the fire hydrant, bird dog, and glute bridge.
There’s no way around it. If you want to have a butt that doubles as eye glue, you’re going to need to use weights to get the quickest results. The weighted glute bridge, the barbell hip thrust, and the kettlebell swing are three of the best exercises. Hill sprints will also provide the needed resistance.
If you work out three days per week, one of those days should have a period set aside for hip extension/glute exercises. Guys do the equivalent thing for their arms, so don’t feel self conscious.
